Temp Files: Temp files are just that, temporary files that usually end in TMP. Now most of these are things you have either picked up on the net or "notes your computer has written to itself". We don’t need them; computer doesn’t need them so its best to keep them cleared out also. Click on "Start" button, Choose "Find", Then "Files or Folders" Type in *.tmp Then hit---enter Click on edit, Select all, then when they are all highlighted, Click file, Click delete.

We don't need any of that there, so here is how to clear it out. Click on "Start": Then "Settings" Then "Taskbar and Start Menu Programs". Click on the tab "Advanced" Click "Clear" then "OK".

Cache: "cache" is exactly what it sounds like. A place where your computer "caches" information for later use.
For Microsoft Internet Explorer:
At top of screen click on "Tools"
Now click on "Internet Options"
Click "Delete Files"
Click "Clear History."
Click "OK", and exit the browser.
Note: It can be achieved by right clicking on the Internet Explorer Icon on the Desktop also.
It is recommended that heavy Internet users must keep this files and history for one day. If you are not, you can keep them for up to 5 days, but remember 2 days is sufficient.

Detecting the Refresh Rate Windows 2000 Setup Please note, before following this procedure, please seek help from our system administrator. Before starting refer to the documentation for your video adapter and monitor to determine which refresh rates are supported by your hardware. Configuring your hardware to use a refresh rate that your hardware does not support could damage your monitor, and is not recommended.
1. Right-click the desktop, click Properties, and then click Settings.
2. Click Advanced, and then click Monitor.
3. On the Refresh Frequency list, click the appropriate refresh rate, click Apply, and then click OK to test the new refresh rate.
4. Click OK, and then click OK to close Display Properties.

Defragmentation:
A program to remove unwanted/unneeded fragments from your computer and align all the different files so they are stored next to each other and computer doesn’t have to "look for pieces". This will speed up your computers performance. [Ask your System Administrator to Defrag]
To run defrag:
Click on "Start" button,
Choose "Programs"
Then "Accessories"
Then "System Tools"
Then finally 'Disk Defragmenter".
When the menu pops up, choose C Drive
Note, you may get a message saying, "this drive doesn’t need any work".Ok fine, if you haven’t uninstalled any programs, and don’t use your computer a lot, then don’t defrag. But if you have uninstalled a program, or your computer gets hard use, then its best to go ahead and run defrag. Try to defrag when ever you delete a program from your computer. Is it necessary? Some say yes, some no but you do according to your wish. “Better safe than sorry”.
Again for this, all programs must be shut down, off line and don’t try to use your computer for anything, (even move mouse on desktop) while this is running. And, it is best that you disable your screen saver before you run defrag. Otherwise, you will not be able to see the progress that is being made. Some "experts" tell us to turn off our virus program while we run scan disk and defrag, some say it is not necessary.

Surge Protection:
It is vital that you have good surge protection for your computer. One of those power strips with the surge protector on it. You can but it at any computer store. This protects your computer when lightening puts a surge on the line and prevents the lightening from going through your computer to get to ground. Use a surge protector on your puter, monitor, scanner, printer -- all of your components. But, simply plugging you computer into a surge protector is not enough! You need a surge protector for your phone line and, if you have one, your cable connection. Yes, the phone line and cable must also be protected from lightening surges. Once a surge protector is hit by lightening and protects your equipment, it must be replaced. The lightening destroys the surge protector and not your equipment.

Scan Disk: Scan Disk does just what it says. It scans your hard drive looking for errors, and offers to fix them if they are found. Errors can be files that are supposed to be one place, and for reasons known only to your computer they are somewhere else. When you run this program and errors are found, a pop up box appears telling you the found error and offers to fix it. You will sometimes be told you might want to "save something to disk" before the computer fixes itself. When this happens, grab a floppy disk, put it in “A” drive and then click yes.
To manually use Scan Disk:
Open My Computer, and then select the local disk you want to check. Eg : “D” drive
On the File menu, click Properties.
From the box displayed click on the tab Tools.
On the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now.
In Windows 2000 server ... Under Check disk options, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors and "Automatically Fix Errors" check box
Now click "Start".
Depending on the condition of your puter, this may take minutes or it could take hours
Depending on what you use your computer for; this should be done once a week for hard users, once a month for casual, and short time use.
It is recommended that all programs must be shut down when you do this, off line, and you cannot use your computer for anything at all when this is running. This includes your screen saver or any virus protection or firewall that you have.
[Be sure you don't set them to run at conflicting times, allow plenty of time for one to finish before another starts. Set them for different nights. Since it takes long time and of course your computer has to be on, you can't shut it down like you normally do when you go off line at night. Just shut off your monitor, and leave computer on.

Firewall:
A firewall is protection against "hackers". Anytime you are online a hacker can get in your computer, look everything over, OR he can use your computer to send out virus's or spam emails. A good firewall should show your computer "off line" at all times. A business or corporate firm would be well arranged with firewalls. McAfee Firewall has already become one of the best.
